Hi!

For chess opening improvement I am in favour of using chess software (freeware is enough in first phase).

What do you say?

I just bought Fritz 8, and I highly recommend using it for opening training.

Well, the best combination is Fritz 8 + the free SCID. The only small disadvantage is that you need disk space for both file formats (cbh and scid), otherwise you need some good money for CB. You can do all your chess works with these two. Both are hard to learn but free SCID has a 24h support service in SCID Forum. If you read some questions/answers you learn a lot.
You can train in Openings with SCID playing against the database! (You must create the database first).
